Sandycove residents have a new way to borrow and return Library materials, and it couldn’t be more convenient! The Library Holds Locker is located in The Wheel, at Sandycove, home of pickleball, the fitness centre, and other services and events.
This new pilot project is aimed at expanding access to library services for Sandycove residents. The Library Holds Locker pilot project will be evaluated to assess its impact and gather feedback from the community for potential expansion.

How to use the Holds Locker:
Picking up Your Hold From the Holds Locker
Getting Started
- Scan your library card or Mobile Library App digital card under the screen in the box, barcode facing up. If the card doesn’t scan, enter your card number manually on the screen.
Picking Up Holds
- Once scanned, choose Select All and the locker door containing your hold will open automatically.
- The item will be checked out to your account.
- If you print a receipt, it will print under the screen at the back of the box.
Borrowing from the Browse & Borrow Collection
- Select Browse & Borrow.
- Scan your library card or Mobile Library App digital card under the screen in the box, barcode facing up.
- Select an item.
- The item will be checked out to your account.
- If you print a receipt, it will print under the screen at the back of the box.
Returning Items at the Holds Locker
Returns
- Follow on-screen instructions to return items.
- Returned items remain on your account until checked in at a library branch.
- Most library items can be returned here, excluding oversized materials.

What is the Library Holds Locker?
The Library Holds Locker is a secure locker that you can open using your library card. You can request items from the library catalogue to picked up at the locker or you can browse and borrow new items without having to request them. The locker is located at The Wheel in Sandycove.
How do I get items sent to the Library Holds Locker?
When you are placing a hold in the library catalogue, select Holds Locker – Sandycove as your pick-up location.
Items are delivered to the lockers twice each week.
Can I have my HackLAB items delivered to the locker?
No, only materials available in our library catalogue can be placed on hold, and sent to the Holds Locker.
Can I use the lockers if I don’t have my library card with me?
Yes, you can type your library card number on the touchscreen. The process is similar to the self-service checkout kiosks within our branches.
You can also scan your library card using our Mobile Library App.
Can I return library items at the Library Holds Locker?
Yes, just follow the prompt on the screen and the return slot will open in order to return items. Please note that it may take several days for the items to be cleared from your account, but they will be checked in as of the day you returned the items to the lockers.
Are there items that cannot be picked up or returned at the Library Holds Locker?
Anything borrowed from Library Holds Locker can be returned there.
Larger items available at the library branches, such as the lendable Cricut machine, and other large objects cannot be picked up or returned at the lockers.
Can I browse books at the lockers?
Yes, there are ten Browse & Borrow lockers with items available to checkout on-the-go.
How will I know when my hold is ready for pick-up?
It takes time for library staff to transport your on-hold items to the Library Holds Locker. Once your items are ready to be picked up, you will be sent an email letting you know. Items may appear as available in your library online account before they arrive at the Wheel. Please wait until you have received the email before going to pick up your items.
If your account is currently set up for phone notifications for holds, you will receive a phone call once your item is available to be picked up at the Library Holds Locker.
How long do I have to pick-up my holds?
You have 7 days from the date of the notification to pick-up your hold(s). Your pick-up date is listed on your hold notification email. Holds that are not picked up within that time will be returned to the library.
I returned my items at the locker, but still see them on my card. When will they be checked in?
Items returned at the Library Holds Locker first have to be transported back to a Library Branch, and therefore may not be checked in for up to a week. Please note that they will be checked in according to the day you returned your items to the lockers.
