Eligibility for Canadian Citizenship

Am I eligible?

  • Have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years.
  • Have filed your taxes, if required.
  • Prove of language skills in either English or French.
  • Pass a citizenship test covering your rights, responsibilities, and knowledge of Canada.
Application Process

The Canadian citizenship application involves several key steps:

1. Check Your Eligibility: Verify if you meet the requirements through the official Government of Canada website.

2. Physical Presence Calculator: Use this tool to determine if you have spent enough time in Canada to apply for citizenship.

3. Language Requirement: If you’re between 18 to 54 years old, you need to prove your language skills in English or French at a CLB/NCLC Level 4 or higher. This can be done by taking tests such as CELPIP or IELTS, completing secondary or post-secondary education in or outside Canada, or participating in government-funded language programs.

4. Prepare for the Citizenship Test: Learn more about your rights, responsibilities, and Canada’s history through the official Discover Canada study guide.

Situations That May Prevent You from Becoming a Canadian Citizen

There are certain situations where you may not be eligible for citizenship, such as criminal convictions, unresolved immigration issues, or living outside of Canada for extended periods. For more detailed information, visit the government website for any exceptions.
